Sannio was a historic-geographic region, located in centre-southern Italy, which was inhabited by the Samnites, between the VII-VI C. B.C. and the first centuries of the I millennium A.C. The land of the Samnites, a population which was one of the most dreaded ones from the Romans who had to face it, in order to gain supremacy over southern Italy, is surrounded by Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Lucania and Apulia. The exact borders were never defined, currently, Sannio beneventano refers to that part of the ancient Samnium found in the province of Benevento. Nearly perfectly equidistant from both the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Adriatic Sea, the land is prevalently hilly, with some important tops, furrowed by rivers and valleys, has always been dedicated to agriculture and express it most of all in the vine and in the olive. The “Sannio beneventano” land is guarded by D.O.C.: Aglianico del Taburno, Taburno, Guardiolo, Sannio, Sant'Agata de' Goti, Solopaca, three of them included in the land of the Regional Park of Taburno-Camposauro. Benevento is the province of Campania with the highest number of vineyard, 11.047 hectares, with a production that correspond to about the half (48%) of the regional total, that has the greatest part concentrated in the municipality of Torrecuso, Foglianise, Solopaca e Guardia Sanframondi.A past rich of history, the resoluteness of a legendary population, a protected land, are all elements that contribute to form an outstanding terroir that sublimely express itself with the Aglianico. So little towns, a chief town crowded of monuments of different epochs, mountain-tracks and vineyards, vineyards, vineyards confer to the Sannio land a look of a sweet rurality that is the background of the development way of its products. After years of wine production based on quality, finally in the last twenty years the shift towards excellent products. In spite of the companies fragmentation, that still permit to conceive the wine like an agricultural and not an industrial product; Sannio’s wines keep an interesting relation between quality and prize and they also heve many potentiality to express.
